The electronics powerhouse has announced that the YU7 will offer a range of up to 518 miles on select trims, with the ability to accelerate from 0 to 62 mph in just 3.23 seconds. This new electric vehicle is seen as China’s equivalent to the long-anticipated Apple car, which never came to fruition, and will be open for reservations starting in July.
The YU7 follows the success of the SU7, which has performed exceptionally well for Xiaomi since its delivery launch in March 2024. The company reported sales exceeding 200,000 SU7 units by April 2025, surpassing the combined global EV sales of Ford and GM.
More importantly, the YU7 is aimed directly at competing with Tesla’s Model Y, the best-selling vehicle from Elon Musk’s company. Xiaomi has been vocal about its ambition to dethrone the Model Y in the Chinese market. In response to Tesla’s updated Model Y, Xiaomi’s founder and CEO Lei Jun even shared a size comparison of the two electric vehicles—essentially a playful contest of dimensions.
The YU7 boasts a sleek, sporty design and matches the Model Y in size and acceleration, while outshining it with its superior range. During his presentation, Lei Jun emphasized that range is the top priority for electric vehicle buyers, motivating Xiaomi to create an SUV that leads in this aspect.
On Xiaomi’s website, the Standard, single-motor YU7 is described as “the longest-range pure electric SUV with a battery under 100 kWh, setting a new standard for mid-to-large size pure electric SUVs with unprecedented range leadership.”
Key features of the YU7 include an Nvidia Drive AGX Thor in-vehicle computing platform, active air suspension, and an innovative 800-volt architecture that peaks at 897V—allowing for rapid charging from 10% to 80% in just 12 minutes, and an addition of 620 km (385 miles) of range in only 15 minutes.
However, the YU7’s ability to challenge the Model Y’s dominance will ultimately hinge on its pricing, which will be revealed closer to its launch in July 2025.
