The electronics powerhouse has announced that the PU7 will achieve an impressive range of up to 518 miles in select trims and can accelerate from 0 to 62 mph in a mere 3.23 seconds. This new electric vehicle, often described as China’s equivalent of the much-anticipated yet unlaunched Apple car, will open for reservations in July.
Launched shortly after the SU7, which has enjoyed remarkable success since its deliveries began in March 2024, the PU7 builds on Xiaomi’s momentum. The company has reported sales of over 200,000 SU7s by April 2025, outperforming Ford and GM in global EV sales.
Crucially, the PU7 is aimed at directly competing with Tesla’s Model Y, the top-selling model for Elon Musk’s company worldwide. Xiaomi has made its ambitions clear, looking to unseat the Model Y in the Chinese market. In light of Tesla’s updated Model Y, Xiaomi’s founder and CEO Lei Jun even shared a size comparison of the two electric vehicles, effectively turning it into a ‘measuring contest’ of sorts.
The PU7 boasts several advantages, including a sporty design. While it matches the Model Y in dimensions and acceleration, it surpasses Tesla’s SUV when it comes to range. During a presentation, Lei Jun emphasized that range is a top priority for EV buyers, which inspired Xiaomi to create a class-leading SUV.
According to Xiaomi’s website, the Standard single-motor PU7 is marketed as “the longest-range pure electric SUV with a sub-100 kWh battery and a top performer in the mid-to-large-size pure electric SUV category, achieving unprecedented range leadership.”
Other standout features include an Nvidia Drive AGX Thor in-vehicle computing system, active air suspension, and an 800-volt architecture that reaches a peak voltage of 897 volts. This setup allows for rapid charging, achieving 10-80% in just 12 minutes and adding 620 km (385 miles) of range in only 15 minutes.
Ultimately, whether the PU7 can dethrone the Model Y will hinge on its pricing, information we won’t have until closer to July 2025.
